NewBo News!
Well… what can I say? It’s not moving as fast as I’d like. The latest news is if the group coordinating this effort receives another $600k before April 1st, 2012 they should be able to start construction of the new facility and be open by November 1st, 2012. WOW – that’s much later than the summer 2012 date originally predicted. I guess $600,000 isn’t much when you’re talking a total budget of $5.3M for a project like this. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the NewBo group has requested $100,000 from Linn County, spread out over 3 years – (but that ain’t happenin’ yet!) The Linn County Board of Supervisors has agreed to a grant of $35k for this year, with the possibility of future grants. There was good news from Kirkwood Community College. They have signed a 10-year lease as an ‘anchor’ tenant. They will provide culinary arts courses using 1,500 square feet. (The NewBo Market Hall has around 18,000 square feet of indoor space. If all goes well and the financial issues are resolved by April 1st expect the market to open November 1st, 2012. IF the funding goals and timelines fall short, it’s possible the market may be delayed until spring of 2013. Do you want to help out? Visit their website http://www.newbocitymarket.comBecome a ‘friend’ for $50. Your contribution will also provide you with some benefits, once the market has opened! We’ll keep updating our web site with news of the NewBo Market |
