NewBo News!

Well… what can I say? It’s not moving as fast as I’d like. The latest news is if the group coordinating this effort receives another $600k before April 1st, 2012 they should be able to start construction of the new facility and be open by November 1st, 2012. WOW – that’s much later than the summer 2012 date originally predicted.

I guess $600,000 isn’t much when you’re talking a total budget of $5.3M for a project like this. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the NewBo group has requested $100,000 from Linn County, spread out over 3 years – (but that ain’t happenin’ yet!) The Linn County Board of Supervisors has agreed to a grant of $35k for this year, with the possibility of future grants.

There was good news from Kirkwood Community College. They have signed a 10-year lease as an ‘anchor’ tenant. They will provide culinary arts courses using 1,500 square feet. (The NewBo Market Hall has around 18,000 square feet of indoor space.

If all goes well and the financial issues are resolved by April 1st expect the market to open November 1st, 2012. IF the funding goals and timelines fall short, it’s possible the market may be delayed until spring of 2013.

Tips, Techniques & Tools!

Tip #1.

Have an issue threading your needle? The hole of a beading needle is usually larger on one side. Try running your thread or Fireline through the other side of your needle! Also, try cutting your thread at an angle making a ‘point’ or if it’s Fireline, try flattening the material with a flat-nose pliers before threading it. Threaders are good to have on hand too! Good luck!

Technique #1.

When making a wrapped loop don’t bother moving your loop from the top jaw of your round nose pliers to the bottom jaw to finish your loop – when you make your first turn around your pliers just turn the pliers upside-down and continue on! Confused? Take the free class on making wrapped loops and it will all make sense!

Tool #1.

Gilders Paste! It’s not your typical tool – but it does make a big difference in your metal projects! Your can change the personality of your metal from plain and everyday ordinary to colorful, and relic-like!

Our 4th Annual

‘So Many Beads’ Sale

I wish we could have this event before we go to Milwaukee – it sure would be a great way to clean out unwanted beading items and earn extra spending money (for more beads of course)! But the timing isn’t possible so we’re sticking with our late July schedule, like previous years. The logistics will be worked out soon – but until then, start packing, organizing, and labeling those items you want to bring to the sale!
